The store on the corner, visible through the dining room window, changed hands three times in five years. It was currently Saving Place, which to Kathy sounded a bit like a church.
She thought she could almost use a church right now, as Alysun picked at her eggplant.
Saving Place had the same sign the previous iterations had. It was yellowing, and the letters were peeling.

Kathy snort laughed.
She leaned over and dipped some of the deep fried eggplant in Alysun’s bowl of ketchup, Grover the Muppet, her favorite, dancing around the bowl.
“Make a Mammoth cave Aly !” Kathy said so cheerily she cringed at herself.
Alysun, who had been enthralled by their trip to Kentucky and loved the caves, opened her mouth wide.
Kathy popped a small, ketchup doused triangle of battered eggplant in her daughter’s mouth.
Alysun chewed. She grimaced while she did it, and that was torture to her mother.
Deb would be home from work soon and Kathy both wanted to hug her and yell at her.
