When Rachel was mad, Esser would take his beer and his lawn chair, climb down from the fire escape and sit on the roof of S&J used appliance, noisiest refurbed refrigerators in the world, the whole damn world ( Esser knew because Esser owned one), and watch traffic at Junction and 39th.
Lots of pretty waitresses taking smoke breaks outside El Barzon. Lots of good car accidents at that intersection, the way Junction hit at a funny angle, Good view. Didn’t need company, didn’t need friends.
Esser didn’t have many friends anymore, because he and Rachel were first cousins and people thought that arrangement was wrong, probably worse because their parents were twins.
