Webb sold the print shop and Carla put in her retirement notice at the hospital.
They had three notebooks full of potential locations to purchase a home for their retirement and finally spend some real time together.
Webb fielded a dozen phone calls about a shop he no longer owned, and Carla spent all day talking with well-wishers, dragging her down medical memories she was proud of but would rather forget. She had hiking and wakeboarding and gardening to get to.
Carla’s phone vibrated during dinner, and that was it. She had a plan.
They drove to town, parked outside the library and walked to the nearest phone service provider.
Carla asked for a map of their 5G coverage. The salesperson politely sent one quickly to her phone.
They walked to the next service provider and asked the same question. They stopped for ice cream and repeated the process at two more providers.
Then they went home and compared all the maps.
And after years of research, they chose their place, on the Montana border, far from the towers, far from the interruptions. They didn’t know if it was possible to completely disconnect, but they were damn sure gonna try.
