Is referring to one’s self as a Renaissance anything arrogant? It seems like that is a title that should be bestowed. If it’s arrogant I’m guilty of it and I’ll own it.
First: My collection of 365 Hundred Word Stories is done and on the way to the copyright office.
It took a bit longer than I originally intended as I was cast in a challenging, time-consuming, and emotional role in the feature film Good Thief. It was not a role one turns down no matter what else is on the personal schedule, and a Franklin Planner is one of the few things I haven’t been handcuffed to in this lifetime.
The idea of a collection came about rather by angry accident, anyway, when I was trying to prove a point to a publishing entity that seems to believe that tossing writers the table scraps of an internet empire is the best way to cajole quality work from them. I never got the opportunity to prove my point directly to them, because I decided in the middle of the process it was best for me to not contribute to their platform at all.
If you don’t know ( many of you do ), I’m an old Detroit punk, and snarling pissed off is a default setting. But I’ve grown up a bit and there is worse shit to do with anger than compile a microfiction collection. So now I have the 365 I set out to write (tossing a few lesser ones in the Incinerator of Poorly Wrought Ideas in the process). I’m going to self publish it, first as a download/Kindle version, then print later on when I can afford it. There is no timetable as yet for the print version, but many of you will receive a copy as part of your “fancy” subscription agreement.
Q.How will this affect my Substack?
A: I’m going to keep writing and publishing short fiction every day. I think (I think I think…) I’m going to shoot for a 200 Word Fiction collection. If you were enjoying the Hundreds, the Two Hundred Worders should work for you as well. The only difference might be that occasionally I may revert back to a 100 Worder, or the daily offering may be considerably longer than that.
I’m also working on a novel in the fantasy genre, The Last Andoggan. If you are a fan of Tad Williams, Patrick Rothfuss, David Gemmell or Joe Abercrombie, you’ll probably dig it. I’m about 50,000 words in.
Other than that, after many delays, this month I am supposed to start voicing The Hare in the animated series Avenging Justice, writing the pilot episode of a puppet show as well as sporadic, ongoing work portraying victims, perpetrators and HIV patients in various industrial training videos.
If you have any suggestions for topics you’d like to see covered, underserved communities I may not have written about or not written about enough, comments, questions, anything, do not hesitate to message me through this blog.
And of course, tell your friends that this crazy thing, Roulette Weal, is the best, most rewarding, fantastic, life-altering, joy producing money you ever spent. The more subscribers I get the faster I can get the paperbacks in print.
Cheers,
Jimmy
