Merc’s mother no longer had to speak. When she walked into his room, she just looked at him, and he knew she meant “Have you looked for a job today?”

Merc would say “I’m trying,” which was mostly a lie, then feel guilty and walk the streets of Meldrum to make his mom think he was looking for his second ever job in his 33 years on Earth.
