“Marlene!”
Jackie screamed and the little grey schnauzer retreated from the fence, skittered back to where Jackie and Adam were, enjoying the first night walk of the spring.
An upstairs light in the house with the fenced yard flicked on.
Adam looked at the window with the light, half expecting to see an angry or inquisitive face. He did not and turned to Jackie.
“She was just sniffing a fence.”
“Those people just got a Bouvier.”
“Do you see a Bouvier?”
“No, but…”
Adam put his arm around Jackie. They had only been together five months, but he was starting to think cohabitation and beyond.
“But relax, I won’t let any mean dogs attack your baby through a fence.”
