The cigar smoke was the warning. Not the smell, that was always there, it was the smoke itself, coming out of the rear window, closest to the Tellburn’s house.
Grandpa was home.
Grandma demanded Mercy come by on her way to homecoming, her and Jayden, in their fancy clothes.
Grandma said she’d try to shoo Grandpa to Ferden’s Hideaway Grill, which didn’t seem too difficult.
But he was here, for sure.
Mercy thought about telling Jayden, was sure she was going to, when Grandma came dashing out of the house, hands in the air, like she was a teenage girl and Jayden was her all time favorite, Roger Daltrey.
