There was a bat in the outhouse, and sometimes Phoebe Keach would ask the bat to take the baby sock she was holding to her boy.
The bat never answered and Phoebe wouldn’t have known how to get him to her boy anyway,
Her boy was grown now, and Phoebe thought he was in jail in Alaska under an alias, that’s what her daughter Thursday told her: Mamma, Brylin is in jail in Alaska for stealing a man’s tools.
Phoebe thought it odd that Thursday knew the crime and not the alias, but probably not much odder than taking her adult son’s last remaining possession that was in her possession and going out to the outhouse to cry.
