A fourth fender bender since lunch happened at the intersection of Lakeside and Ninth, almost right over the shoulders of the cops, milling around, trying not to sit on the hoods of their cars.
A man got out of one of the cars brandishing a metal detector like a bat.
Mike Petowski, the Detroit vet, said “I got it.”
He ambled over to the scene.
Jeff Daltzer, the rookie, surveyed the beach.
One sunbather, almost as an act of rebellion.
