Poor Bergren. I suspect no one had ever showed him compassion, and now he wouldn’t even be able to thank her or pleasure himself with her memory.

The thing about divulging his crime would be that the reader would decide there if it was forgiveable, as opposed to thinking about another injured human being regardless. Or maybe you don't need to root for Bergren, you can cheer a woman who would wander the ice in the dark to help a stranger.
