In 2003 I was in Beijing and a young woman approached me in the street and asked me to explain the meaning of the English word "grotto" which (she told me) had appeared on her battery-powered translation device.

I thought this unusual, but we spent a few days in each other's company. I have her photograph somewhere. Your story reminded me of her and the possibilities of a single word.
