In 2003 I was in Beijing and a young woman approached me in the street and asked me to explain the meaning of the English word "grotto" which (she told me) had appeared on her battery-powered translation device.
I thought this unusual, but we spent a few days in each other's company. I have her photograph somewhere. Your story reminded me of her and the possibilities of a single word.

Beautifully written. A subtle testament to empathy opening doors to new connections and conversation, no matter the language.
Thanks. I like this one, as sweet as it is
Nothing more arresting and poignant than simple human connection as it becomes more and more a rarity.

Nice. Points for the teacher AND the custodian.
This one might make a good short film
One kind sentence which gave hope.
And the mission to serve continues on.
What a beautiful story!
Well done, Jimmy!
Thanks JS!
Very touching
Thank you
Really nice feeling to this story.
I try to throw in some uplifters amidst all the dark
