You are able to do what really fine fiction writers do: With just a few words, a complete personality is drawn by your potent prose: "Quick to smile, quicker to cry," is emblematic of your truly gifted way of conjuring a lonely, messed up kid. However, it was a bit depressing as it gave me flashbacks of my Mother.
Thank you for the amazing words. Snippets of the story were drawn from my childhood too. I hope it's OK if I use an excerpt of this review in my marketing. Please let me know.
You're welcome. There are many people who write, but only a few people write well. You write very well. I would like to comment on your most recent piece, but I can't because I am not a paid subscriber.
I invite you to look at some of my posts on my site., Mad Dogs and Englishmen. There is a problem: They are all over the place and include essays (on politics, economics, sexuality, the natural sciences etc.), comedic autobiographical sketches, snide , sarcastic accounts of my days in politics, college and insane asylums, and poems (And they are not the sort of contemporary stuff that is free associative, bereft of rhyme and meter and consists of self-indulgent accounts of sexual orgies, slights or traumas.) Man, I am sorry if the preceding makes me sound like a dyspeptic SOB; normally I'm a cooler guy.
As a fatherless son, I can relate to the exploration of masculinity without a male presence. I bretended to be what I thought masculinity was, until I eventually became my own man, just 30 short years later.
I still love this one. Had to reread it
I still love this one too
Ha! Love it!! Shine on Gary!!
I figured you might dig it.

You were right, this is a very good one.
I'm not ecstatic with all my work. The response I got and continue to get for Eggshells makes me very happy about it.
Me neither. One I’m really proud of, though, is called “Face-Off”. It’s 100 words and I made every word count. I’d love for you to read it.

Is there a significance to the two periods? Am I missing two periods in the story?
New favorite.
Excellence right here. This is -esque of many, many things that hallmark amazing fiction. All nice chops. Thanks! We couldn’t put this down.
Thanks for reading. This adult little boy of an eccentric mom is grateful.
Dude, I’m going to dig into the archive. You def got me with this one.
That makes me smile. Share your favorites with the masses, please.
Touche! Way to go Gary. That's gonna leave a mark. Very nice, Jimmy!
Glad I didn't lead you astray. Maybe Circus of Life next?

Wonderful, Jimmy, wiping away the tears.
Thanks, Paul. Your response brought the emotions out of me too.
