I put the old toilet on the curb for bulk trash collection. Looked at it out the window, thought that was easy.
When I was a kid a neighbor put an old fridge on the curb without taking the door off, and a kid hid in there and suffocated.
I didn’t know the kid, though he only lived two blocks away and the obituary said he was into some of the things I was into, like basketball and fishing.
The toilet sat there, maybe I was wrong about bulk pickup, I thought about sticking some flowers in it to make it look less unsightly. Then I thought they might not pick it up at all.
On Saturday morning there was a neighbor sitting on the toilet, surrounded by lights and cameras.
He was filming a rap video, sitting on the toilet–my old toilet, where my ass had been thousands of times– smoking a blunt and juggling three money rolls in his right hand.
The following Thursday night my sister called to say my nephews saw my house in a new video.
Friday morning people were posing for pictures next to and on my toilet.
Saturday afternoon three more toilets had joined mine, and an impromptu block party had started.
There were teens on toilets on longboards racing down the street, a virtual peloton of wheeled commodes, bass was thumbing from a car like it was there to sandblast the walls of the houses and I don’t know what one girl was drinking but it was bright green and she could barely walk.
My sister called to say she was bringing the kids, because my block was viral, it was a spot now, it had drippy vibes.
I watched the video, and discovered it had spawned dozens more.
I wanted badly to take credit for a trend, for a creation, for a vibe, but I realized I am just an old man who discarded a toilet in a neighborhood where they’re in no hurry to pick up the trash.
