Mmmmm, I don’t see him as a good man, I feel he was a difficult man to live with and put on social fronts when he needed too. He was jealous of his wife’s successes. Not really a bad husband just the type that his wife walked on egg shells a lot of the time.
All my stories are open to interpretation, but I think " jealous" is much too strong of a take, especially considering he still displayed Evelyn's plaques and was conscious enough of them that he straightened one.
Ok, I’ll agree to that, someone was at the door so everything should look perfect. Perhaps he felt inadequate in someway to his wife? Excellent writing...
I didn't feel this at all. I imagine him walking on eggshells because he knows his temper disappointed his wife. I see him more as a man struggling with his own short comings rather than being critical of others. He may have imagined his wife as literally his "better half". Now that she's gone he's trying to manage with the half he has left. He clearly is self-aware, caring, empathetic.

He's a good man
Great story!
Thanks Joe. Wrote it...while watching hockey.

He definitely felt inadequate, that he couldn't live up to her standard, but was conscious of it, trying to improve in her honor.

"The girl blushed so deeply it looked like the brim of her knit cap was red." Bravo.
Thank you again for your insightful thoughts. I think I judged him too harsh.
You know I love this one, Jimmy.
Of course you do 🥅
